Ok found it, simple really.

Blindly following some instructions for setting up gdm for use
with ltsp, I uncommented the "1=/usr/bin/X11/X" line under the
[servers] section in /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf.

Now I get Display :0 and display :1 on the same physical screen.
This starts out as a disaster as each X server fights for control
of the display and mouse etc. Then somehow by sheer blind banging
on the key's I've managed to flip them out so that ctrl-Alt-f3
selects one and ctrl-alt-f4 selects the other. I dunno how I did
this but if anyone does that'd be handy to know 'cause now I can
run Windoze under VMware on one 'screen' and my normal login on the
other and flip between them using ctrl-alt-Fn sequences

Very Cool!

Of course I'm not game to ever restart the box now cause I don't
know what I did to split the two sessions from fighting over the
one screen :-(
