I think I might not have made myself clear. I might be mistake, but last time I
set up samba to work with NT and 98, 98 did not use encrypted passwords, so I
modified NT to use plain text passwords (I could not find a way at the time to
get 98 to do otherwise). 

So if you had samba working with 98, and you tried to get it running with 2000,
and 2000 used encrypted passwords, then samba might not work with your existing
samba installation.

Samba will do encrypted passwords, but I don't know about 98.
