Have you tried:
smbclient -L //<linux-machine-name>
When it asks for a password just give it a <CR>.  You should be seeing all
SMB boxes on the network (ie the linux box and bob).  If you don't there
is probably a problem with your samba setup.

Sounds like it.

Have you changed the workgroup names?
I suspect there could be something that has changed in the smb.conf.
What version of samba are you using?
