I don't use autoanswer in any of the modem pools I have set up.  The
reason for this is that when your machine is down the modem will not
answer and waste the callers' money.

Getty is not a good program to use - The preferred one is mgetty (ie
modem-getty).  The default settings work fine for most sites.  To be quite
honest with you I haven't had the need to play with modem parameters for
years and I don't remember what most of them do.  The most I have to do
these days is to use minicom (a terminal program) to verify the remote end
username/password and wether it uses username or login... (for the chat
script).
