I'll lay long odds that it's not trying to set the permissions
to a string, but to "". What's the bet that the regexp that is
finding that begin is something like: '^begin \(.*\) \([^ ].*\)$'.
Of course, someone being careful would have used something more like:
'^begin \([0-7][0-7][0-7]\) \(.*\)$'
