Because they tend to only take half the time specified.
These books aren't bad, but I don't recommend buying one, because once
you've leartn from them, they are useless as references (mostly, ymmv).
I'd consider myself an intermediate C programmer, and the book i'm
always referring to is K&R.
O'Really books on programming specific areas are good, too.
