and more basically, ifconfig will show you what's up and the MAC
address and so on

heh, yes -- redhat wrote it, for RH6. It scans the PCI bus (and
others) and keeps a log of what it found, and prompts you / runs config
programs on boot if it found something new. eg. if it finds a new sound
card, it drops straight in to sndconfig which is a nice idea (and
I believe something Debian doesn't do ;)

but, in order to be able to USE the card once it's found it the
kernel module for it needs to be lying around. Check if kudzu is
actually running and if it found anything, check if lsmod shows that
the module for your network card is loaded, and do all the stuff
