One of my faves is "The UNIX System", by S. R. Bourne (author of the
original Bourne shell). Chapters on editing files (ed,vi), the shell,
C, system programming, document preparation, and then (as important as
the shell) - data manipulation tools: awk, cmp, comm, diff, grep, join,
sed, sort, tail, tr, uniq, and lex and yacc. ISBN 0-201-13791-7. 1983.
If it's still available, try to grab a copy.

Bourne wrote clearly and well, with a deep understanding of his subject
matter. A book you can both sit down and read, and flip through as a
reference.

It's kind of bitter and sweet that the whole book is still valuable and
relevant today.
