On my brothers geforce, you set it to tv out and it will retain it...
even past a cold boot. We did that, moved the pc into the lounge room
plugged it into the tv and viola.... only through the tv, bios and all.

Although that was in winme, so i was assuming if you were to go to 
linux, unless it messed with stuff it would remain tv out-ed.

Although i think the proper way is best.
