Small side digression

And how a lot of big companies 'improve' their software. I spent Tuesday
afternoon watching presentations of all the new skills in a new release
of GIS software and almost everything was something developed by
customers in the previous ten years - it is now incorporated into their
software as features.

Still not an open source gis software of the same capabilities as the
big boys of GIS, but you do get the code for Smallworld (not tuesday
pres) = Emacs, and I'm running it on Linux.
