Maybe this helps..

Make sure you have compiled support for it in your kernel. Recompile a
kernel and make sure.

Then the following stuff in lilo.conf would help (the console and serial
stuff) the rest will be different in yours :)

append="console=ttyS1,9600"
#linear
boot=/dev/hda
root=/dev/hda1
#install=/boot/boot.b
map=/boot/map
vga=normal
delay=20
serial=1,9600N8
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.17-tulip
        label=Linux
        read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16-tulip
        label=old
        read-only
