Just a thanks to Dean and let you know mu prob was solved.
I had trouble getting mod_perl to compile into apache with PHP as well.

Have a look at Chuck Dales at YourWeb :-)
Anyhow Dean suggested...
> let mod_perl configure apache
> make mod_perl
> go in to the apache dir and make it also then install it
> go back into the mod perl dir and install it
