Just a quick note to thank those who helped with my WWW to database
interfacing. I finally have this working in very inelegant form at the
moment, i.e. I can dump my authors table from my books database.
Essentially I tried cgi & perl, but apart from messages about premature
end of script headers, I couldn't make hide nor hair of it, i.e. get any
meaningful errors out.
Step two was to try PHP again (I tried php3 about 12 months ago), which
it did what it did last time - Nothing - no clues, no errors, no output.
Step three was to ask SLUG list if there was any alternatives and then
the relevant parts of the internet went missing.
Meanwhile, the manuals for PHP had finished downloading (four days of
hammering by wget finally had them on the hard disk) and a few late
nights, a few questions to slug and bing! - something worked.
The problem is that I don't know what the problem was.
Dean's reminder of server-status and server-info was what uncovered it.
Initial use just said I didn't have permission. A check of the config,
said that all should be denied but allow localhost., which seemed
correct but didn't work. So, since the dev machine is not on the
internet, opening this up had these working.
Bing! - another round of testing had <?phpinfo()?> working and I was
away.
All I can assume is that Netscape was having trouble with "localhost"
somewhere and finally fixed itself. Yep, I know it is "not the right
answer", but I've been around too long to discount it.
Anyway, PHP is working, so I'll plod along with that interfacing to
MySQL, and when I have nothing better to do, work out why Perl will not
work.
Thanks all
