Thanks to all those that offered assistance, turned out to be a problem with the cable. Susceptible to interference. Replaced cables on both machines problem went away. Because we were experiencing the problems on both machines, we didn't suspect the cables straight away but after installing other OS's and got same problem decided had to be a hardware fault.
