Which version of Mandrake? If 7.2, did it pop up a message during
install saying something like 'Some of the hardware in your computer
requires proprietary drivers to work. See <http://www.linmodems.org> for
details.'? If so, you've got a winmodem. You can also try typing 'cat
/proc/pci' and 'lspci' in a terminal, assuming it's a pci modem (my
understanding is that most winmodems are pci, and I'm guessing that this
may be your problem). What you're looking for is the lines about
'Communication controller:'. Try 'cat /proc/pci' and 'lspci' and tell us
what you see. If you see 'Communication controller: Lucent
Microelectronics WinModem 56k (rev 01)' or similar you're in luck,
because Lucent winmodems are pretty well supported under Linux, probably
the best supported winmodem at the moment. If you see
Connexant/Rockwell, PCTEL,or ESS, it's also possible to get it working,
but probably more difficult. If you see 3Com you'll probably have to
write your own driver. Check out the Linmodem HOWTO
<http://walbran.org/sean/linux/linmodem-howto-all.html> for more details
on the various drivers that are available.
