I think you will find this only applies to boxed sets and the product ID
is really a serial number in normal jargon. If you buy a boxed set from
most Linux distros then you are usually entitled to some "support", etc.
But, if you can do without the support direct from the distro people,
i.e. you have a LUG like Slug to help you, then you can save $ on the
boxed distro.
