I just tried that; interestingly enough it was precisely the same effect 
between wav/cd as mp3/cd

Well indeed, this is true - but I'm fairly convinced of its validity. As a 
musician, I have close to perfect pitch - but additionally when I play a 
recorded, steady & unchanging musical note simultaneously from an mp3 and a 
CD, it acoustically produces an unsteady vibration between two distinct 
[micro]tones (obviously, this was only done for testing reasons and isn't the 
only context!)

Pretty strange I reckon.
