As others have said, the 'm' is 'modem'.

For an example closer to your PC, check out the first two bytes of any MS
executable from DOS 2.0 .EXE right up to current PE executables (which have a
DOS 2.0 header).
'MZ' == Mark Zibowski. Guess who wrote the DOS 2.0 .EXE loader?
LeCoq was a good deal more subtle, methinks.
