That's right - extra work, bigger holes. Don't use telnetd (even at home),
kids. :)

Debian has a substantially saner set of configuration files - everything is
usually in the one place, and anything that isn't software-specific is quite
yummy. Compare /etc/network/interfaces to /etc/sysconfig/yada/yada/yada.
If you're playing with a dektop system, have a play with the beta/alpha
Ximian Setup Tools. Perky, and well architected (from what I've seen so
far).

Debconf is a standardised configuration utility, not so much for building
packages, but providing a standard interface to configuring them.

Ooof! Banish the thought of rc.local from your mind. The ipmasq package does
abstract things, but in a very sane way. Instead of having all your rules in
one file (probably badly commented), you have 'drop in' rule files. It's
compatible with both 2.2 and 2.0 utilities, and can easily be extended for
2.4's netfilter.
Installing ipmasq should be all you need to do. If you want to load ip_masq
kernel modules, you can tell it to do that, otherwise, all the work is done.
Look at the default ruleset by typing 'ipmasq --display' -> a good example
of some of Debian's good defaults.

I made the switch some time ago, thinking it would take an eternity to
understand the nooks and crannies... Having a few great people around to
help has made it easy.
