Speculate? Yes. They're running the servers on NT, and using replication
services to synchronise them. The database on one server got corrupted,
and replicated itself to the other 3 servers. This caused the DNS service
to stop running on each box - which is why they responded to ping's, but
didn't resolv DNS requests.

Gotta love that NT technology, huh? :-)
