ahhh.. that's still being figured out. The sysadmin who will be running
this server is yet to figure out exactly what sort of tools he wants to
have, so in the meantime I've told him to play with GQ, which is quite
good, but I don't really think it's specific enough for what he wants.
When they figure that out I'm guessing I'll end up writing a php or perl
driven web page to let them do all that stuff.

It's not yet perfect, and a lot of the time you need to go through pam to
make stuff work, even though native ldap code is being promised, but it's
mature enough to make a working system with now. I personally prefer going
through pam, because it's a consistent interface for the database. It
means you don't need stuff like multiple password fields.
I have started writing a howto, as requested by someone here, but that
might take some time. I'll post when I've got a beta version on the web,
it'd be nice to get some feedback.

well, we wrote a perl script to populate our database initially. That
worked quite well. The situation here is that it will be a little while
before they need to do any real administration, so we'll help them out
when they need to do it until they decide that they'd like a tool to do it
themselves. The ldappasswd and ldapadd tools are fairly straightforward
though. I'd advise that you set up some aliases with them though, because
they're a lot of typing. An alias to replace the passwd commmand would be
fairly straightforward.
What are other people using?
