Phew, finally got it back working again. It seems the tarball version needs 
to know where the password file is located using 'smb passwd file = 
path'    Thanks to Ricky C. The version I used before was an rpm version 
and this parameter did not exist in the smb.conf file. Now have samba back 
up again as well as smb_auth working nicely for Squid.
