Thanks Ken and Jeff, your suggestions proved correct, although I
did have some fun trying to figure out why my changes to 
/etc/X11/XF86Config were not having any effect, until I realised
that this was caused by having stored a copy of that file
in /root, which then took precedence over the one in /etc/X11.
