samba will do domain logons for windows 9x/ME
samba tng will do that plus NT. i beleive 2k talks kereberos
(that).
samba tng supposedly supplies user lists to windows clients also
for use with per user access privileges

you can hook samba into lots of things inc pam and then start
all sorts of mischief. Samba authenticating off apache for example
(which i believe is possible)
