Simple suggestion: get a real SCSI card. The POS SCSI cards those
companies supply with scanners, etc are some of the crummiest 8-bit card
to have ever existed.
You don't have to get anything fancy. Just something that's well supported
under Linux and does proper DMA so it doesn't hog your CPU. Sorry I can't
recommend any models.

My Epson Colo[u]r Stylus 740 works great with its native USB port. I don't
know how well supported these USB->parallel adapters are under Linux, but
it's certainly do-able. I've been using 2.3.x/2.4-pre/2.4.x kernels for a
while now. I don't know how well the 2.2 USB back-port works.
