You're on the right track with this...
Read The framebuffer documentation in your kernel source:
Documentation/fb/vesafb.txt -> That has the correct vga= settings which
you'll need to put in /etc/lilo.conf... Typing these in at the prompt has
never seemed to work for me.
For example, sputnik, our little Toshy notebook uses (from memory)
append="vga=0x317"
