You are on the right track, but the critical things here are your monitor
and video card. One of the crucial things in having an easy time with Linux
(and especially X), is having solid hardware with good documentation.

The HorizSync and VertRefresh are the *really* important lines... More often
than not you can get these (or approximations) from your monitor manual, and
I'm sure there's a few websites that will give you working ones.

I'm assuming you're running X3 -> feel like trying X4? I find it a lot
easier to get going than X3 (no need for modelines on modern monitors, etc.)

You haven't mentioned exactly what problems there are with your display ->
they will help find the cure. :)
