So I read, only it doesn't give an error code just the "L", and it is
happening on a virtual disk under VMware which is very odd.

This is the first time I have had any problem with an installation under
VMware.  I guess I shall have to try it with a real disk, I was wanting to
use the virtual machine to build up and test out a new system I need for a
client.
