No problems with ALSA and my SBLive here. It's cool because the hardware
can mix multiple (32?) PCM streams, so several applications cat open
/dev/dsp or whatever and play sounds. No need for ESD or ARTS.

The only concern I have is the internal architecture. The Linux audio
quality HOWTO has interesting information:
http://audio.netpedia.net/aqht.html

It says the SBLive is "all digital" internally. All the mixing and
processing is done digitally at a 48Khz sample rate. The analog inputs are
digitized before being processed, and any digital data has to up-sampled
to 48Khz if it isn't!
I guess this cuts down on noise (it is much cleaner than my old sb16), but
I'm a little concerned about artifacts. Like, I've only noticed since I
got it (last month) that I get weird phasing effects when I play back
(through my TV card) a video tape I had recorded. I'm sure that didn't
used to happen before. I suspect it's some interaction between the audio
circuitry in my VCR (filters?) and this 48Khz sample rate.

Anyway, that's my input.

hope this helps.
bye
