Yes, I believe it's start-stop-daemon that does the respawning, although I don't
see anything about that sort of behaviour in the man page.
The nice thing about the way debian does it, is you can just do a
/etc/init.d/gdm stop
(or xdm or kdm, whatever the case may be)
to stop gdm/kdm/xdm. No switching runlevels and possibly starting/stopping other
things in the process. Which is nice :)
