Craige McWhirter was once rumoured to have said:

The *main* registry hack is the PlainTextPasswords hack, which is
required if Samba is doing authentication locally, without the SMB
Encrypted Passwords. The hacks have nothing to do specifically with
share mode.
In fact, If I recall correctly, if you're using plain text passwords,
NT will usually spit the dummy at the first [automatic] attempt to
authenticate as a pseudo-warning that your password is about to be
transmitted in the clear.
