I had a similar problem with Toshiba Tecra laptop I eventualy
dowloaded an XF86Config and cut 'n pasted mosted of the
downloaded version and away it went...

The only problem is I cannot remember where exactly I got the config
file from and what the magic thing was that got it working.

Might have been here http://www.shroom.com/linux/laptop/8000.html

There is actually quite a bit of info on Toshiba laptops on the web.
Good luck.
