I'm sure there's a whole FAQ devoted to this somewhere....
# free
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 255688 247656 8032 0 2208 75648
-/+ buffers/cache: 169800 85888
Swap: 240964 184844 56120
Oh no! I only have 8M free!
not.
The "-/+ buffers/cache:" line is more useful. The disk buffer and cache use
almost all your free memory, so you usually want to ignore that first line.
I have almost 80M used up with the buffer and cache, with 85M really free. Note,
I am running the Gimp, Setiathome, and a bunch of other things. And the 2.4
kernel is rather gready with swap - it tends not to swap things back in until
they're needed or something...
