There is a rtl8139too driver that you can get with recent kernels. I believe
its also available from Donald Beckers home page. Your problem may well be a
wire(cable) problem. Does it happen identically both ways?

I dont know but is there a way to force 10Mbs on the standard driver,
sometimes with the 8139 based cards they can't auto negotiate so well :/
