In the memory of the shell process.
If you want them to be persistent, i.e. always set even after
relogins/reboots, etc., you need to put them in your ~/.bash_profile or
~/.bashrc files (assuming that you are using bash as your shell, which
is usually the case).
Is that what you wanted to know?
