Okay, quick run through the setup:
- Set up a Linux box to act as the local mail server.
- Run an MTA of your choice on this box (postfix is very fast to set up, and
works securely).
- Set up a fetchmail daemon to collect email from users accounts (or if
you're stuck with one, a domain in a box account) at the ISP and deliver
to local user accounts via the MTA.
- Conventially, these are stored in /var/spool/mail/<user> or ~/Maildir
depending on what you use.
- Set up IMAP on this server, so all your client machines can view email,
and probably use it as the SMTP host.
