I am in the process of building a new
machine, my current 300mhz system isn't
too bad I want something that's a little
zippier (Duron 850 or so).

My current system is quite loud due to
a problem with the power supply unit,
this computer will be moved into another
room so I won't hear it but it made me
think about how quiet I can make my new
system.

The following components all make noise:

- power supply fan
- video card fan
- second case fan (doesn't apply to me)
- hard drive ("idle" hum and r/w ticks)
- CPU fan

There's also one REALLY strange noise
that comes from my machine that someone
may be able to identify.

Whenever I run something that needs heavy
use of the processor (or maybe memory,
I can't tell) a consistant noise in the
computer will change pitch (higher). Why
do you suppose I get this change in pitch ?
Is this the bus, ram or cpu or something
else ?

What should I focus on when selecting
parts for a new computer and even perhaps
a case ? Obviously i'll need a CPU fan and
a PSU fan, a little video card fan and the
hard drive .. this pretty much leaves me
with "secondary case fan" which I think is
not required.

I suppose the easiest way of doing this would
be to buy a quiet power supply unit, AFAIK
the noise is due to moving air and not really
due to friction of the fan itself. Would that
mean that a slower fan would be required ?
As long as there is some circulation of air
heat should not accumulate, perhaps it would
still be safe to have the fan operating at
half its speed.

Noise doesn't bother me when i'm working but
it's noticable when you sleep in the same room
and have the computer running all the time.
