Thanks. I managed to download 75% of tomsrtbt-1.7.279.dos.zip from the
aarnet mirror site before the connection went and I could not reconnect due
to 'busy server'. I sucessfully booted using the RH7 boot disk - until the
localhost login screen appeared briefly before starting the now-familiar
routine of screens flickering from blue to black to random colour to looping
the messages previously described. I suspect the same will happen with
tomsrtbt (which I'll attempt finish downloading tomorrow, it seems a useful
thing to have around). I think that reinstall is the only viable option and
since I have a choice of RH7.1 and Debian Potato CD's lying in front of me,
I'll go with Debian and be a bit more careful about memory management and
surplus software this time. The Debian CD booted beautifully but I was not
ready for the install ....

It is a while since I have used RedHat. The RH7 boot disk probably has
a kernel on it so you can get back into your system if the MBR has been
trashed. It will, however, still depend on the / filesystem on your hard
drive.
tomsrtbt on the other hand is a complete micro distribution on one
floppy. This disk has been specially designed for rescuing broken
systems. It runs entirely in RAM (you need at least 8MB but it is hard
to find a computer with less than that!) Everyone running linux needs
one (unless they have the Linuxcare "Bootable Business Card" CD and a
computer that can boot directly from the CD).
