Interesting prob Geoff, I thought that one might be able to map C-X C-S 
either to :w or to some harmless keystrokes such as "your in a superior
editor now"
but vim says of the syntax map {lhs} {rhs}: 

"It's not possible to use a CTRL-C in the {lhs}.  You just can't map
CTRL-C.                                                   
The reason is that CTRL-C must always be available to break a running
command."

But what interests me is why does it lockup. In my vim here when I press 
Ctrl-X Ctrl-S nothing happens. Vim is fine.
