Its worth a try just for the new version of KDE (well if you use gnome I
cannot comment). However, I had a few probs:
1: I am using a dac960 based card (Mylex) and cause the way Linux loads
the kernel you need to have a non RAID harddrive to load the kernel,
mine is a adaptec 2940 based (as I need to have tape and cdrom access).
When I rebooted after the install the kernel couldnt find some libs hence
the kernel couldnt mount root. I havent figured out why! After
a long time of mucking about I decided to do a fresh install and
that went flawless. Bugger I then had to spend a few hours to
get everything up and going again.
2: Sendmail comes by default with TCPWRAPPERS on, this is so stupid dear
RedHat developers. TCPWRAPPERS will stop ANY mail from going through BUT
the ones coming from the mailservers you specify. Now how many thousands
of mailservers do I have to add?????????
I searched the net for an hour or so to figure out how to stop this.
I can say that I am totally pissed of how people answer questions:
"this is in the FAQ", "RTFM", "read the sendmail site" but no hint
how its done (mind you BEFORE that I went to *ALL* the sites but
couldnt find a thing).
I ended up compiling it myself and using my install (I had the full
set of CD's).
3: They didnt tell anybody that they did not include IPCHAINS module in the
kernel (last versions it was part of it). So I installed my init script
and when I started it I got this funny error message from Rusty HINTING
that something in my rules were wrong (I mailed him about what happend).
Well as this version was a new IPCHAINS and I had the one from RH6.2 I
believed it in the first place.
So it took a while to realize that the module was missing, once I did
an "insmod ipchains" at the start of my script it was fine.
How do you figure out what is part of the kernel and what is not?
4: There is a little problem with dcopserver. If you start applications
from the commandline the communication between the client and server
breaks (especially if you log in as user and want to run some apps
from the command line based on a root shell). I heard that a number
of people have this problem, so it will get fixed.
As log as you start the apps from the menu :-(((( everything is fine.
(whats the point, that looks to gui based).
One thing I have to say: Redhat heard what people said that the last
version were a little insecure coming straight out of the box. This one is
the opposite, its pretty tied!
Has bee running ever since (19 days) without probs.
