Thanks for the replies on this. Definitely the case that it was dying
immediately it started (I had a brain set that it was starting a second
before the first was up). Again the files mentioned in man inittab were
none existant or binary, but I did find that Suse has a /var/log/warm
file that explained what was happening

I find the doco for hylafax very unhelpful and consequetly inittab was
running faxgetty with the options for fax answer and faxgetty was
objecting to this string of options.

Has anyone got a url for setting up faxes, preferrably faxgetty/hylafax
(other than the Hylafax doco)?

As I understand it, faxgetty actually answers and receives the fax, but
it has to be told by faxanswer to answer the modem, but I can not find
out what tells faxanswer the modem is ringing. Once faxanswer is run it
promptly takes the modem off hook with out waiting for it to ring, so it
isn't an inittab thing. Any info?
