Hear hear.
Is this policy set in stone in the SLUG FAQ? And if not, why not? Do
we have a FAQ? :)
Q. Can I post job advertisments to the SLUG list?
A. No. This is a Linux Users list.
Well, yes, but only in special circumstances.
a) You must have earn sufficient respect from the rest of the SLUG
community, usually acheived by posting useful answers to
questions posed.
b) Your job posting *MUST* conform to the following rules:
i) Contains the string [JOB] at the start of the subject line.
ii) Makes use of the X-Advertisement mail header
iii) The entire content of the body follows this pattern:
"Need <job title>, see <url>."
iv) Your signature is delimited by the regex /^-- $/ and
contains no more than 4 lines of text after the delimiter.
Q. Isn't that a bit harsh?
A. Nope.
If you are hiring, why post here? This is a Linux *users* list, not
a recruitment list. There exist other fora for this. You are also
more likely to find the person you're looking for by advertising in
the right place. Most of the SLUGgers have jobs, if they wanted a
new one they'd know where to look.
If you think that you want someone explicitly from SLUG, and you're
respected enough that you won't be flamed to death, then a simple
reference to a URL containing a decent description of the job will
be accepted by most people. Bandwidth isn't free, so respect us all
(and especially the SLUG machine, who has to mail it out to the
hundreds of subscribers) by making your mail as short as possible;
interested people will view your URL.
Finally, the [JOB] marker is just courtesy, it lets people know what
the mail is about, and can be filtered out (or even used to find
your post again).

Better to teach a man to fish than to give him a fish. And if he can't
be bothered to learn to fish and starves to death, that's a good enough
outcome for me.
