Thanks for this Dean. I ended up with a whole new perl
installation.

But when I issued the above, after what looked very promising
(for ages!) I wound up with this:

make test had returned bad status, won't install without force
Unfortunately I don't know how to force it and I don't know what
error 29 is. I feel tantalizingly close to a breakthrough...but
I'm just not there yet.
