I have a Geforce2 GTS 32meg (don't know how different that is to the TNT2 version - although it uses the same drivers), and it runs flawlessly.
I'm using xfree 4.something also, but running Debian Potato.
Make sure you use the nvidia drivers (think they are now version 1) and use "nvidia" not "nv"(nv will give you the problems) in the config files. All this is in the instructions on their site, real easy to follow. Even a newbie(me) got it working!
But I guess mileage can vary...
