actually, believe it or not it might matter.
There was a bug in the errata fileutils to RH 7.0 in mkdir that caused it
to return false errors. that particular bug does not exist in any other distro,
not in virgin RH 7.0, not in RH 7.1, not in any other eratta.
Your description dounded alot like that particular bug.
