Nup, you don't need to use the framebuffer at all. [ ...and shouldn't! it

Your best bet is Matrox. They make the slickest 2D cards, with the best
image quality. Four a four head setup, you could use two Dualhead G400 or
G540 cards, or multiple G200's.
The "real" people doing trading room floor stuff use a special range of
Matrox cards which support up to 8 heads on the one card (multiple chips,
but yeah). This is probably what you're looking for - they are expensive.
