One of the things I did when moving was to lookup www.whereis.com.au to
see if I can find the area, then lookup say www.yellowpages.com.au and
find something like a video shop, pub or supermarket's phone number, then
go to the bigpond.com page and see if you can get ADSL on those phone
numbers.

The trick then is ordering a phone connection that's not only on an
exchange that supports ADSL, but is on the right equipment rack. For this
you'll have to find a telstra tech who services the exchange you're
connected to and bribe them or at least get them to mention ADSL on the
work order, hopefully the tech installing/connecting the phone line will
be nice.

I had no such luck. I got a line installed after verifying the exchange
supported ADSL only to find they'd connected it to the part of the
exchange that didn't have ADSL. Then I had to connect it to my sister's
line only she had call barring which was incompatible with ADSL so I had
to get that removed, but it was there because she never paid the bill so I
had to get the line cancelled & reconnected in my name, then when the tech
came out to do the physical install the line was too crappy so I swapped
the lines around which meant telling everyone a new phone number to ring
(bad) but I had call control on that line (good) and finally.... after
waiting for the ADSL network in all of NSW to come back online the
connection worked just fine.... even under Linux.
<WHEW!>

PS. I pass through Morisset on the train daily.
