If your manager tells you to go off and find various implementations of cost effective, efficient and maintainable web/file proxies to be used on a large corporate enterprise network, how long would/should it take you to do an indepth comparative investigation and prepare a written report ? Assume that there's no expectation on hours involved, but you should commit a couple of hours per week.
