Thanks, Marty. I did turn that up with the google search. Again, maybe
I am missing something, but I can't get it to deliver to non-gateway
machines. 

Example:

mail alant      - delivers mail immediately to alant@sage

mail alant@chickie - queues the mail; any attempt to force it results
in "stat=Deferred: Name server: mail.hermes.net.au: host name lookup
failure".

So for some reason, I am not fully bypassing the DNS lookup. The line
"my.home" is in local_host_names and (just to be on the safe side) in
sendmail.cw.

My service.switch file is:
hosts   files
aliases files

and the /etc/hosts is working fine for all other networking tasks.
