xls files are proprietary Microsoft Excel files, so you're definitely not
going to get a (reasonable number of characters) one liner.
There is a new perl module for sucking data out of (and writing to) Excel
files though; perhaps it would do the trick.
[ Simpler: export to csv and use cut. ]
